Prevention Strategies
There is not a lot of ways that you can prevent Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative Colitis is an unknown as to why it happens. Thus, hard to prevent because you don't know what prevents it. There have been studies of possible strategies, but more study is needed. For example, an appendectomy may protect against Ulcerative Colitis, but more studies is needed to prove this. The only other possible strategy is from recent studies that show that nicotine protects people from Ulcerative Colitis, but nicotine is a risk factor for other diseases such as Oral Cavity Cancer or Crohn's Disease.
Doctors believe that the patients diet may influence Ulcerative Colitis, but more study is needed. A few lifestyle and home remedies that may prevent Ulcerative Colitis is by limiting dairy products, trying low-fat foods, limiting fiber if its a problem food, and depending on you, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine might promote Ulcerative Colitis. A few other dietary measures that can be taken to try and prevent Ulcerative Colitis is to eat small meals, drink plenty of liquids, and consider multivitamins. Depending on the patient these remedies have reduced pain, diarrhea, and gas. As well, a patient with Ulcerative Colitis may want to consider talking to a dietitian. As well, a patient should try controlling stress by exercising, regular relaxation, and breathing exercises. Finally, a few patients may take unnecessary diet precautions such as avoiding spicy and fried foods which may or may not make the attacks and symptoms better or worse.
In some cases clear food diets are necessary for patients with severe Ulcerative Colitis. A typical clear fluid diet may consist of jelly, apple juice, tea with sugar, chicken broth, and beef broth. If the Ulcerative Colitis is extreme a typical full fluid diet may consist of orange juice, strained oatmeal, 2% milk, brown sugar, coffee/tea with sugar and cream, custard, blended juice, strained cream soup, pineapple juice, and ice cream. In some cases tube feeding is necessary because the patient cannot drink enough, does not like the taste, and tube feeding reduces the side effects from Ulcerative Colitis.
